Amu House is a beautiful 16th century bed and breakfast located in the heart of Lamu Town's UNESCO World Heritage Site on the northern Kenya coast.

This traditional Swahili home has been fully restored and transformed into a comfortable bed and breakfast.

The first floor has been renovated to its historic 16th century beauty. When you enter Amu House you will feel the magic that envelops this Island. There are extensive hand carved plaster reliefs and small niches called vidaka decorating all the walls on the lower level. The kitchen doors and cabinets inside are carved of incredible mahogany wood.

It is here that our guests enjoy a complete breakfast each morning of fresh tropical fruits, fresh fruit juice, eggs and toast and Swahili spiced chai and coffee. If you would like to try a traditional Swahili breakfast of bajia, mandazi, viazi and the like, just ley us know at the reception the evening before.

Climb the stairs and you will find on two levels the addition of seven self-contained guest rooms, furnished in traditional Swahili style, all with private verandahs. While we aim to offer modern conveniences we have built the guest rooms using traditional architectural styles and furnishings so as to maintain the feeling of days gone by. All rooms have mosquito nets and an overhead fan.

Our guests love our rooftop terrace, with a thatch covered sitting area for daytime relaxation and an open area perfect for watching the bountiful stars and moonrise in the evening. From here you can gaze at the sun rise across the channel over Manda Island and watch the sun set as you look over the rooftops of Lamu Town. This is a favored spot in the house, the breeze keeps our guests cool and the environment is very relaxing. We offer complimentary WiFi on this top floor for our guests convenience.

Amu House is centrally located in historic Lamu Town. The house is approximately a three minute walk from the main jetty.
You can fly into Lamu Airport which is located on the neighboring island of Manda with daily flights from Nairobi, Mombasa or Malindi. When you provide your arrival information, an Amu House representative will greet you at the airport. This is a complementary service. There is a Ksh100/- ($1) boat transfer fee per person for the ferry transport from Manda Island to Lamu Town.
 
Sax, Fly540, Air Kenya and Silverstone currently fly from Nairobi and Malindi to Lamu.
Sax and Skyward Express currently fly from Nairobi and Mombasa to Lamu and Safarilink flies from Nairobi to Lamu. Most airlines have a website where you can book directly.
Be advised: There is a charter company called Hahn Air which comes up on Priceline. This is a consolidator which can charge up to double the price and rumor has it there were sometimes no seats and unreliable bookings resulting in cancellations for the Hahn Air passengers. We suggest booking directly with the airline.
 
You can also travel by road from the south coast, Mombasa or Malindi. It is a bumpy hot ride though the road is slowly being tarmacked. It is an average of 7 hours from Mombasa and 4 hours from Malindi to Mokowe, where you can take a boat to Lamu Island. We recommend you spend a bit extra and fly from Malindi.
 
The last part of the journey from any destination is by boat. In Lamu we have no cars!
